Nestled in the scenic back roads of Warren County, a once-modest log cabin has been transformed into a stunning family home. The homeowners, who initially purchased the property as a retreat, soon realized that while they loved the cabin and its surroundings, it wasn’t large enough for full-time living.
“We owned the property for several years while living in town,” they shared. “But when we decided to move out here permanently, we knew we needed more space than just a one-bedroom cabin.”
Initially, they assumed they would have to tear down the existing structure and start from scratch. However, after meeting with Liz and Steve Nelson of Providence Homes, their vision for the home shifted. Liz immediately saw the potential to preserve and restore the original log cabin while seamlessly integrating a new addition.
One of the defining elements of the home’s design was its breathtaking back view. “Our favorite space was the back porch,” the homeowner explained. “So, we wanted the home to be centered around that, making the view the focal point.”
The Nelsons worked closely with the homeowners to create a cohesive look that balanced rustic charm with modern functionality. Every detail was carefully considered, ensuring the addition blended seamlessly with the original cabin.
“Steve hand-draws all the plans after meeting with homeowners to make sure we capture their vision,” Liz shared. “With this home, we worked on the design for about four months. We want to get everything right the first time so that there are no regrets.”
While structurally sound, the original log cabin required updates to meet the family’s needs. The renovations included new flooring, sealing the exterior to prevent bugs, upgrading windows and adding a soaking tub.
“The easier choice would have been to tear it down, but we knew we had to preserve this beautiful cabin,” Liz said. “We moved earth and navigated multiple challenges to make sure it could stay.”
The Nelsons take pride in the small details that make a home truly special. One of the unique touches in this home comes from their son, who was featured on the TV show Forged in Fire. He handcrafted several metal elements, including the range hood, a custom plant hanger in the kitchen and the chandelier in the dining area.
In the homeowner’s office, thoughtful design choices added both character and function. “We built custom shelving to maximize space,” Liz explained. “I also suggested a glass door, which the homeowners were hesitant about at first. Now, it’s one of their favorite features.”
In less than a year, the home was completed, growing from a humble one-bedroom cabin into a spacious 4,200-square-foot retreat with three bedrooms and three and a half baths. The transformation not only honored the original structure but also created a warm and inviting home that will stand for generations.
“Our goal was always to create a space that felt natural and timeless,” Liz said. “We’re proud of how it all came together.”
