As a designer and co-owner of Embellish Home in Bowling Green, Lisa Marshall has helped design and furnish many homes for other people around the Bowling Green area. Now, she decided to start her next chapter of life in a new, custom-built home in the Olde Stone neighborhood, and she created a home that she loves that fits her current life and style.
“I knew I wanted to move out of my house and do something new and I wanted to build,” Marshall says. “I love building, and I really wanted to live in a place that had a great view, so I purchased my lot in Olde Stone a couple of years ago. When I started to build, I wanted to build something great for having my family around all the time.”
Marshall loves the openness of the 5,000 square foot home. The space includes three bedrooms, three and a half baths, plus a bonus bunk room area. She made sure that the home featured big, open spaces for areas that her and her family spend the most time and included lots of opportunities for indoor and outdoor living to enjoy the weather and the view.
“The home features big spaces, but we wanted to keep it comfortable and livable,” Marshall says. “It has 12-foot ceilings, but people say it still feels so cozy and comfortable. The home is more casual and livable.” Marshall says that big, open spaces are a challenge to make feel cozy and warm. She worked to accomplish a cozy feel by utilizing fabric textures and rugs, bringing in warmth that way.
For the home’s style, Marshall says that she drew inspiration from several different sources, including growing up in Texas and collecting pieces over her life. “The home’s style is pretty simple,” Marshall says. “I would call it transitional, a bit of West Coast casual. There’s Texas influence because of where I grew up, and the house has cleaner lines. I like a lot of different things, I like mixing. I don’t have heirloom pieces, but I love a collected look, so I’ve found objects that are vintage and then paired them with new furniture from Embellish Home.”
Marshall’s favorite area of the home is the den, which features deep blue cabinetry and a couch of the same color. She loves that the room is functional and can serve as an office, TV room or game room. She has kept much of the home neutral in color, but with a few bright, colorful spots. “I have a color-drenched powder bath, with very colorful wallpaper on one of the walls,” Marshall says. “I also have one feature wall with dark green in a bedroom. There is wallpaper in the primary bedroom that looks like artwork. It consists of a 9x12 mural broken up into three panels and we have frames around each piece.”
After breaking ground in July 2023, Marshall says that they were able to finish the home in plenty of time to furnish and decorate each space for the Builder’s Association of South Central Kentucky’s Parade of Homes this past mid-September. They were honored to walk away with every award from the event, including the new category of Best Interior Design. Marshall says that she, along with her coworkers Natalie Hughes and Madison Thomas, were involved in so many decisions for this home before it was featured in the parade and she says that is a service that they offer to anyone, depending on their needs. “I picked out everything about this house: the trim, the paint colors, furnishings, accessories, lighting, everything,” Marshall says. “We do that for customers as well. We are working with a lot of new builds now and we can assist in any way that a client needs.”
