Run the Maple 5K to be held October 19th

In 2021, Sawyer Burch was diagnosed with Trifunctional Protein Deficiency (TFP), a very rare metabolic disorder that prevents his body from converting certain fats to energy. Because of this, Sawyer’s body breaks down his muscles for energy, leading to neuropathy, frequent hospitalizations and the possibility of sudden death. Currently, there are less than 100 documented cases worldwide of TFP and no one living into their 30s.

Research for TFP is very promising! But with the majority of extra government funding going to COVID research, children’s lives are on hold. Dr. Gerry Vockley, with Pittsburgh Children’s Hospital, is the world’s leading specialist on metabolic disorders and his research towards a CURE is currently having success in mice trials AND we have gotten word that a clinical trial is possibly in the near future! In the last three years, Bowling Green’s donations have enabled Dr. Vockley to continue his research for the year, allowing him to further develop a medication that could change Sawyer’s longevity of life. As always, 100% of proceeds will go towards funding TFP research at UPMC Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh and will help children fighting this and other metabolic disorders.

We have been able to raise these funds through our annual Run the Maple 5k at the Maple Retreat, which we are having this year on Saturday, October 19th. Sponsorship packages are available. For more information, contact [email protected].
