America's Newest Destination Bowling Green Joins The West Kentucky BBQ Belt

Announced ahead of National BBQ Day, Western Kentucky can now celebrate a new destination with the freshly established West Kentucky BBQ Belt. Local establishments Split Tree BBQ and Smokey Pig are included in the trail and the experience is sure to be un-grill-ievable for those looking to “pig out” in the region.

This initiative from Kentucky Tourism aims to introduce the world to a region synonymous with mouthwatering barbecue, rivaling renowned producers like St. Louis and Memphis.

Bowling Green is among 18 other cities and DMOs across Kentucky participating in the partnership which aims to promote the unique sizzle and smoke of bluegrass barbeque.

“We love our BBQ in Western Kentucky and this new trail is a wonderful way to show off its long-standing history,” said Sherry Murphy, executive director, Bowling Green Area Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Visitors to the West Kentucky BBQ Belt can expect a journey through tradition, joining in the never-ending rivalry of Owensboro’s Old Hickory founded in 1918 vs. newcomer Moonlite Bar B-Q, founded in 1950. Roy’s BBQ in Russellville and Thomason’s BBQ in Henderson are just a few of 40+ establishments passed down for generations and enjoyed religiously. Locals can jump into the pit and visit Split Tree BBQ and Smokey Pig in Bowling Green to join in on the experience.

“These locally owned BBQ joints are steeped in tradition and guarded by families and friends for generations. The mouth-watering array of smoked mutton and ribs that have become synonymous with the region offer a truly unique experience,” said Abby Dixon, executive director, Henderson Tourist Commission and project lead.
